Climber hails Eric Shipton
Acclaimed Mountaineer Stephen Venables is giving a talk in Aberdeen as part of this season’s Royal Scottish Geographical Society talks programme
Eric Shipton was a legend in the world of mountain exploration, taking part in five Everest expeditions, but was best known for his lightweight, highly mobile approach to other, less famous, peaks.
Internationally acclaimed mountaineer, writer and broadcaster Stephen Venables tells the story of this legendary mountaineer as part of this season’s Inspiring People talk programme in Aberdeen on February 6 (7.30pm).
Illustrated with stunning pictures, Stephen will mix readings from Shipton’s inspirational books with his own experiences on the same mountain ranges. One of the greatest mountain explorers of the twentieth century, Shipton took part in five expeditions to Everest, famously missing out on Sir Edmund Hillary’s historical ascent of the mountain after being sacked from the expedition. Admired by explorers, and loved by women, he inspired a generation of mountaineers, including Venables, who in 1988 became the first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen.
