Pubs call for Jubilee hours
The Scottish Beer and Pub Association (SBPA), members of which operate 1,200 of Scotland’s 5,000 pubs and which represents most of the country’s major brewers and drinks companies, has called for Licensing Boards to allow pubs additional trading hours to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on June 5 this year.
Lawyers acting on behalf of the SBPA have written to all of Scotland’s Licensing Boards to ask that Boards consider giving operators additional trading hours over the Diamond Jubilee weekend to mark the occasion.
In its letter to Boards, the SBPA’s lawyers say the “Diamond Jubilee is precisely the sort of exceptional event of ‘national significance’ envisaged by Section 67. Indeed, the statutory Guidance for Licensing Boards published under Section 142 of the 2005 Act, specifically exemplars (at Paragraph 108) “the Royal Jubilee” as a “special event of local or national significance.”
“The SBPA respectfully propose that licensed hours should be extended by one hour on Sunday, June 3 and Monday, June 4 (the latter date being a Public Holiday) which arrangement would afford the maximum benefit to our clients and their customers.”
Patrick Browne, SBPA Chief Executive, said: “It’s hard to imagine a more special event in the life of Britain than the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – and Scotland’s pubs should be at the heart of the celebrations, without the red tape around extending trading hours.”
“Licensing Boards should ensure that the people of Scotland are able to give Her Majesty the Queen the massive national ‘thank you’ she so richly deserves.”
