Pupils press for path
The Finzean pupils are pictured with local councillors
Pupils from Finzean Primary made the case for safer access to and from school to local councillors and the roads department last week.
Head teacher Julie Hughson said the Primary three to Primary Seven children presented their suggestions and plans to make the access from the end of the path to the school gates safer to Councillor Jill Webster, Councillor Linda Clark, Councillor Karen Clark and Ralph Singleton from Aberdeenshire Roads Department.
Also present was Joanna Stewart, Aberdeenshire Safer Routes to Schools Officer, and Karen Bradburn, the school parent who initiated this safety initiative.
Julie Higson said: “The pupils did us extremely proud last Friday. Through their own written and produced DVD, power point, dramatisation and photographs they confidently highlighted the positive impact the path was having on their and community members’ ability to come to and from school in a safe and healthy manner and how if we could make the end of the path safer with clearer access to the school gate, it would be perfect.”
“As a next step, our children are in the process of organising an evening presentation to our Parents/Parent Forum and community stakeholders to ask for their assistance in adhering to the new safety measures we intend to have in place.
“These include staggered gates at the path openings to the public road, various cyclist dismount signs and zig-zag signs for no parking between the school gates and the end of the path.”
She said the pupils were delighted with the positive, enthusiastic and immediate response that they received from all the local councillors following their hour long presentation.
