Fantastic fundraiser!

A Deeside woman whose son has a rare urological condition has helped raise funds for equipment which will save North-east children travelling to Glasgow for treatment.

In November 2010 Catriona Gambles, of Torphins, reached her target of £10,000 to buy a urology machine for Glasgow’s Yorkhill Hospital before relocating to Deeside.

Ms Gambles has now raised over £24,000 and is putting the funds raised in the past year towards helping Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital purchase a Urostym biofeedback machine for children with a host of muscular disabilities to have treatment locally.

Her son Jamie, 8, was born with a rare urological condition which has resulted in several operations.

The machine, which is due to arrive in Aberdeen within the next four weeks, will be only the second in Scotland and will save Jamie having to make a six hour round trip to Glasgow for weekly treatment.

Ms Gambles said: “We moved up to Torphins in August last year and straight away started to raise funds to get a machine at the children’s hospital in Aberdeen.

“There was still money left over from the Glasgow appeal because the consumable costs of running the machines are very high but we set a new target of £20,000.

“A couple of weeks ago we reached our target thanks to a £5000 donation from the Orcome Trust in West Linton and have been able to order the machine.”

Ms Gambles has been raising money for Kidney Kids Scotland through a web site and admitted that she is amazed at how much money has been donated.

She said: “I can’t really put the amount of money raised down to anything, I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated because it will make a massive difference to not only Jamie, but a number of other children from the North of Scotland.”
