A full house for Banchory Singers’ concert
It was a full house for Banchory Singers Concert on Saturday, May 26, writes Sharon Kirk.
A mixture of familiar and less well-known songs showcased Banchory Singers’ versatility.
The concert began with the Singers bursting into the hall for their animated opening number ‘We Go Together’ from Grease. This was followed by other favourites from shows, before they moved onto a section of spiritual numbers. Siyahamba, in particular, was given a rousing reception. The concert was also an opportunity for Banchory Academy pupils Amber Massie, Natasha Cutler and Rosie Herrington to reveal their wonderful talents. They are to be congratulated on their captivating performances.
A stylistic shift and the Singers moved to the classical portion of the concert. From Thomas Morley’s double entendre jovial ‘Now is the Month of Maying’ the Singers moved effortlessly to the ethereal ‘Panis angelicus’. There were several fun, tongue in cheek items arranged by the musical director Tara Leiper with input from members of Banchory Singers for which the audience showed their appreciation.
In the second half, the Singers travelled the UK with traditional music from all corners. Special mention must be given to several members of Banchory Singers who stepped out of the comfort of singing with a very large choir to give performances as individuals, duets or part of an ensemble.
A selection of marvellous choral arrangements of modern classics completed the concert, culminating in the 1978 Queen masterpiece ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’.
The sight of all the members of Banchory Singers sporting Freddie Mercury moustaches is not easily forgotten. Musical director Tara Leiper is to be congratulated on extracting an impressive range of contrasting tones from the Singers. Another mention goes to the Singers’ regular accompanist, Shona Elliot, who showed her immense skill throughout out the challenging programme. Banchory Singers are to be congratulated on a very successful evening’s entertainment. There will be another chance to see them performing in Scott Skinner Square on Saturday (June 2) as part of St Ternan’s Fair.
