A great night of dancing in Torphins

Traditional dancers gathered in Torphins last Friday for Scottish country dancing to the prestigious Frank Thomson Band.

More than 70 dancers came together to enjoy a lively evening of dance and music. The Banchory SCD Club, which hosted the evening, were joined by dancers from as far afield as the Moray coast, Angus and Blairgowrie, in spite of the poor weather. The evening was compered by Isobel McMillan from Finzean, who called the dances with her usual good humour.

The band, led by Frank on first box and ably supported by Sarah on the fiddle, also featured Neil Mitchell on second box and Craig Mainland on drums. A good tempo was set and some fine tunes were played. The dance warmed up with some vigorous dances such as The Australian Ladies. Two dances newly published by the RSCDS were included: Mist o’er the Loch and The Castle of Mey. The great favourites were the lengthy but delightful dance Ian Powrie’s Farewell to Auchterarder and another square dance Culla Bay. The dance finished with two old favourites, The Highland Rambler and Reel of the 51st Division. A generous buffet was provided by the Banchory Club at the interval.

The Banchory SCD Club meets on Wednesday evenings in the Banchory Town Hall at 7.30pm. All dancers are welcome to join, and may contact Cathy Gedik on 01330 824180.
