Dougie tops festival bill

A stellar line-up is in place for the second Deeside harvest folk festival, celebrating the musical and food culture of this unique part of Scotland.

Top of the bill are singer/songwriter Dougie MacLean, internationally-renowned for his song ‘Caledonia’, and one of the world’s finest chefs, Shirley Spear from The Three Chimneys restaurant in Skye, who is guest speaker at the Harvest Supper.

It’s quite a coup for this young event to be bringing such iconic personalities to Deeside. ‘A national musical treasure’ (SingOut USA), Dougie MacLean has performed all over the world, his songs have been covered by a host of top artists, his music has been used in Hollywood blockbusters and he was awarded the OBE last year for his services to music.

Shirley Spear has won many awards for her wonderful food.

The revered New York Times restaurant writer, Frank Bruni, recently mentioned The Three Chimneys in an article about his top five favourite places to eat in the world.

Shirley will talk about the importance of Scottish recipes and dishes in our culture.

This year the main concert, with Dougie Maclean, Aileen Carr, the Spiers Family, Frieda Morrison, Hector Riddell and Sarah Beattie ,will be at Finzean Hall.

All other events – the Harvest Supper, Saturday afternoon concert, stortelling and open mic sessions – will be at the festival’s base at the Potarch Hotel.

Artists already confirmed for the Saturday afternoon concert include internationally-known traditional singers Alison McMorland and Geordie McIntyre, Blyde Lasses from Shetland, Danny Couper and fiddler Sarah Beattie.

Deeside company Birseland Media is hosting the event.

Company spokesperson and festival organiser Frieda Morrison said: “It gives us great pleasure to be able to welcome singers and musicians from all over Scotland to this part of the country once again.

“It gives us a chance to celebrate our traditions – both musical and culinary – and give people a real taste of this area.”
