Emeli releases debut

Alford singer Emeli Sande Brits released her debut album ‘Our Version Of Events’ this week and it immediately shot to Number 1 on the iTunes chart.

Reports from the field suggest it’s flying off the physical shelves too, and is making a serious challenge for the top spot in the national chart on Sunday.

Emeli has been awarded the 2012 BRITs Critics Choice Award.

The award is for new British acts that the critics tip for mainstream success in the forthcoming year.

In previous years it has been awarded to Jessie J (2011) Ellie Goulding (2010), Florence and the Machine (2009) and Adele (2008).

The artists are chosen by a team of experts including the music editors of national newspapers, key music and lifestyle magazines and music websites plus the heads of music at major radio and music TV stations.

The award is open to artists signed to a label who are set to release their debut albums in 2012 and over 100 artists from a range of genres were considered for the award.

Emeli this week revealed her school friends once stole a song she had written to start their own band.

The 24-year-old has been named by Simon Cowell as his favourite songwriter and has written for Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, Cher Lloyd, Susan Boyle and Tinie Tempah.

She began writing when she was seven and was shocked when one of her own songs was used when she was still at school.

Emeli said: “It was about an alien coming to earth looking for love, and it wasn’t very good. It didn’t have much structure.

“My friends formed a girl group for this talent show and they sang my song. I was in the audience and thought, ‘I recognise that!’ That was my first lesson in copyrighting, anyway.

But now the Heaven singer enjoys hearing other people singing her songs.

She said: “I don’t ‘sell’ songs, as such. I give them to people. I love the reinterpretation, and the fact someone can change a lyric to mean something I’d never thought about or intended.

“Some people think it might be odd writing for other people, but I haven’t felt like that. There’s no one who’s sung a song of mine that I haven’t respected.”

Emeli’s album ‘Our Version Of Events’ is available to buy now.
