Top flautist and Aberdeen composer collaborate at Barn
Internationally acclaimed flautist and Scottish Album of the Year nominee Richard Craig will collaborate with Aberdeen-based composer Ross Whyte in a performance at Woodend Barn on Saturday (21 July) at 8pm.
Titled ‘Melancholia’, the performance combines 100-year-old archival film with live electronics performed by Ross Whyte and contrabass flute performed by Richard Craig. The performance features a 1906 film by American cinema pioneers the Miles Brothers which was filmed in San Francisco days before a major earthquake lay much of the city in ruins.
The performance is a semi-improvised response to this footage. Ross will electronically manipulate some of the music created by Richard’s contrabass flute and will also perform a solo set which again incorporates projected archival film. The performance marks the first stage in an ongoing project that explores the nature of melancholia through sound and image.
Ross Whyte was recently commissioned by Woodend Barn to compose a work for the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Banchory. He is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at the University of Aberdeen where his field of research is concerned with audio-visual intermedia and headphone-specific composition. Richard Craig is a leading interpreter of contemporary music and has recorded for various international broadcasters. His critically acclaimed album Inward was recently nominated for the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year award.
