Devoted diamond couple were made for each other
A DONSIDE couple who met as small children and began their romance during World War Two celebrated 60 years of marriage on Thursday (April 26).
Herbert Roper, 83, met his wife-to-be, Beatrice, 86, known as Betty, when they were small children living in Kingston Upon Hull.
He said: "Our parents were very friendly and we went on holiday together. Our fathers worked for the same insurance company and were in the cricket club together."
Herbert described the romance as coming on very gradually and that a close friendship developed between the two while he was away in the army for five years. He was a captain and worked with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, where he was mostly concerned with the repair of tanks. He was posted first to France, then to Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Middle East. When Herbert was away Betty, who worked as an accountant, regularly wrote to him and when he returned on leave they would spend a lot of time together.
In 1947, Herbert returned for good and after two months of being reunited with Betty, the pair married at St. Martin's Church, Kingston Upon Hull, on April 26, 1947.
Herbert, who worked as an antique furniture restorer, described the pair, who moved to York in 1962, as "Siamese twins".
He said: "We both enjoyed the same things, we both liked gardening and were very keen cyclists. Betty was also interested in tennis and badminton and we were in a walking club. I think the interest in fitness helped us to live a long and happy life."
When asked the secret to a successful marriage Herbert said: "It is a matter of give and take. The secret is to work at it and go along with each other's ideas."
The couple moved to Sauchen in 2000 to be closer to their son Howard, 55, his partner Theresa and their granddaughter Marie-Claire, 9.
Betty, who has Alzheimer's disease, moved into Muirhead Care Home, Muir of Fowlis, in January this year, after Herbert cared for her for four years. However he still manages to see her regularly.
"I see her once or twice a week and take her out in the motor car," Herbert said.
The couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with their family at a lunch at the care home on April 26. Echt councillor Gurudeo Saluja presented the pair with a bottle of whisky.
