A FAMILY from Westhill is set to tackle the Edinburgh Marathon on May 27 in a bid to raise £1,000 for Breast Cancer Campaign and in memory of wife and mum, Katie Johnston, who died of Breast Cancer in 2003.
The three Johnston sisters, former Westhill Academy pupils, Shona, 29, Eilidh, 31, and Lorna, 23, along with former Aberdeen Grammar rector, dad Bill, 59, will each run a stretch of the total 26.2 mile distance.
Shona, who is an academic at Glasgow
University, said: "We wanted to take part in an event to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign, which funds independent research into breast cancer throughout the UK, and to do something together.
"When my mum was ill she walked the 5K Race for Life in Aberdeen. She was a very friendly and outgoing person and wanted to help others. She also wanted to have targets to work towards during her treatment.
"She was brave and brilliant and I know that the prospect of new treatments as well as advances being made in research gave her a lot of hope and kept her going and we all felt we wanted to something together as a way of giving back," said Shona.
Shona has taken part in the 5K Race for Life in Glasgow before and her sisters have also run in the past to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.
"This is our first attempt at anything of this distance. I am looking forward to it and think it will be a really good occasion," said Shona.
The Johnston team will all be wearing the signature pink Breast Cancer Campaign T-shirts for the run.
