STARGAZERS are being invited to a Donside village which is to stage a blackout in order to highlight the problem of light pollution.
Residents in Alford are set to have a blackout on March 21 to create an opportunity to appreciate the night sky.
The event has been organised by Grampian Life Forum, a group of individuals who met on the internet and have an interest in energy cons
ervation.
Russell Ward, web designer for the group said: "The main aims of this event are to raise awareness about light pollution, encourage people to be more responsible about energy and also to promote community spirit."
Mr Ward added the project has seen great support not just from the local community but also from all over the world.
"We had a letter of support from the WWF in Australia as it is having a similar event in Sydney at the end of March. We have also received a letter from Greenpeace UK," said Mr Ward.
The group is even hoping the Aberdeenshire Coucil will switch off the streetlights in the area for an hour.
"We have spoken to the police, ambulance and fire services and they are all supporting the event," he added.
An Aberdeenshire Council spokesman said discussions were still ongoing with the organisers and a final decision had not been made.
The group will meet at Grampian Transport Museum at 8pm and plan to enjoy a dark hour between 8.30-9.30pm. Astronomers from Aberdeen will be attending the event to point out constellations such as Orion and different elements of the sky. Telescopes will also be set up to allow locals to have a more in-depth look at the night sky.
Mr Ward said they were expecting at least 100 people to turn out for the evening but warned stargazers to come prepared bringing rugs and flasks.
A meeting before hand is also being planned at the Alford Public Hall from 6.30pm-8pm where budding astronomers can view a cosmic dome and learn about different constellations.
