AN initiative to stamp out underage drinking and antisocial behaviour took place in Westhill and Alford over the weekend March 2-4.
The weekend was part of the Safer Scotland Campaign, which aims to crack down on crimes such as vandalism and violence.
Over the course of the weekend uniformed foot and mobile patrols as well as plain-clothes officers, were deployed in areas where
groups of youths are known to congregate. During the operation 25 individuals were searched for offensive weapons, four were charged with crimes and offensives of an antisocial nature. A further two juveniles under the influence of alcohol were conveyed home to their parents. In addition, 41 bottles and 17 cans of lager, six litres of soft drinks mixed with alcohol, two litres of cider and a 70cl bottle of vodka were seized.
The initiative was co-ordinated by Westhill Police Sergeant Iain Murray. He said: " The deployment of the plain-clothes officers was particularly effective as it enabled us to engage with youngsters who would normally attempt to avoid contact with uniformed officers. Although this initiative was carried out under the auspices of the Safer Scotland Campaign, we will monitor intelligence and emerging crime trends with a view to repeating this operation in Westhill and Alford."
