John and Laureen Canessa cyceld from Inverness to Aberdeen for Deeside and Kincardine Befreinding Society

A Maryculter couple have got on their bikes and raised £1,000 for Kincardine and Deeside Befriending.

Volunteer befriender Laureen Canessa and her husband Mike took part in the Oil & Gas Technology, Ride the North cycle challenge.

The pair cycled the gruelling 165 miles from Inverness to Aberdeen to raise funds and awareness for the older person’s charity.

Laureen first became a volunteer befriender with Kincardine and Deeside Befriending last year and has been visiting a man called John.

John is 97 years old, has limited mobility and lost his wife some time ago.

The charity thought John could use a visit from Laureen.

Laureen said: “Before I became a befriender I did not appreciate the difference one can make to an older person’s life by giving up a couple of hours a week. Although I work as a teacher and lead a busy life I always make sure that I don’t miss my weekly visits to John.”

Funds raised will be donated to the charity to help with training more befrienders.
