A feast of music at Keig

KEIG School is this week playing host to a Scottish Music Week, as part of Homecoming.

The week-long event is being co-ordinated by Daniel Thorpe, BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2010, and sees a packed programme of workshops taking place at the school.

The son of Head Teacher, Jane Leghroumi, Daniel won the battle between "five exceptional finalists" to lift the coveted title during the recent Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow.

The 23-year-old from Inverurie told BBC Radio Scotland, who broadcast the event live, he was "absolutely delighted and surprised", saying: "I'm still coming to terms with winning, I've got a permanent smile on my face!"

Daniel is joined in Keig by two other musicians, Tia Files and Heather Downie, and pupils have been treated to lessons in voice, whistle, drumming, keyboards, fiddle, guitar and clarsach.

The three tutors held a concert in Keig on Tuesday night and the schoolchildren are having a showcase concert in the school hall on Friday, March 12, at 7pm. Everyone is invited to go along.

Daniel began playing the fiddle aged seven. He graduated with an honours degree from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) and is currently pursuing a professional career, both performing and teaching.

He plays with "Tyskie", an experimental trio, as well as working on his solo material and with ceilidh band "Heuch". As well as performing, he is heavily involved in music education through the Glasgow Fiddle Workshop and the RSAMD's Musicworks programme.

Tia Files is a multi-instrumentalist from Oban. She performs with the band, Bodega, focusing on rhythm with acoustic guitar and djembe, but is a highly-talented piper, fiddler and bassist too. She is also a member of the Ruairidh Macmillan trio and is currently working on his debut album. In 2009, she was commissioned to write a piece, "Skylight", for Aberdeen international youth festival which was performed by "Ceol Mor" and directed by Harris Playfair.

Heather Downie has always had a love of Scottish music and has been singing for as long as she can remember. Her passion grew working with the late Martyn Bennett, and at 15 she began playing the Scottish harp. She has just graduated with a first class honours BA in Scottish music and is currently working on a postgraduate year, specialising in Scottish harp and piano. She currently performs solo, in fiddle and harp duo "A Little Bit of Somethin", as well as with trio, "Tyskie".
