Ballater business are the big cheeses!
Firm founder Alex Reid
The Cambus O’May cheese Company, based outside Ballater, won a gold award for their Lochanagar cheese at the British Cheese Awards in Cardiff.
As a medal winner they were then put through to the Scottish finals where they were narrowly beaten into second place.
Alex Reid, the founder of the company said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award. We have put a tremendous effort into developing a facility that allows us to combine the old farmhouse traditions of cheese-making with up-to-date equipment. We have demonstrated through the award that hand-made cheese is still the best.”
This is a major achievement for a young company that has recently moved premises to a modern, purpose-built creamery.
Over 900 cheeses from 187 cheese-makers were entered for the various categories of the awards.
“Competition for medals is really tough” Alex said.
“It’s a real accolade to have won. There were 77 Scottish cheeses entered. To beat all of these to second place is remarkable.”
He says the company is now looking to the future and is currently working on a smoked cheese and a blue cheese to add to the existing range.
