Blitzing the litter in Alford

Alford Primary pupils recently took part in a spring clean of the village as part of the annual Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

Each day, two classes, sometimes accompanied by members of the public, went on a litter pick.

The early stages classes focused on making sure that the playground was free of litter. The older classes ventured out into the village and collected several bags of rubbish and litter.

At the end of the week. a dozen black bags full of litter were deposited in the school skip, leaving the village much tidier.

At the same time, pupils were encouraged to think about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

Various competitions were held to highlight this message. Each class was invited to create a fashion item from waste.

The end products were then shown on the catwalk to the whole school. The winning design was a multi-coloured dress, designed and made by P5.

Runner up was P6/7 with their newspaper outfit fit for a queen. P2 took the third place with their class set of sparkling newspaper bow ties.

P4 were also on a winning streak - they were the class who collected the most items for our TerraCycle Bins and so helped to raise the most money for the school.

The school can raise money by recycling the following items: Kenco eco refill packs, pens, Aquafresh toothpaste and toothbrushes, Tassimo packs, Ella’s Kitchen sackets, clothes, Danone yoghurt and Actimel pots.

Finally, pupils were invited to take part in a home challenge to create a piece of art entirely from waste.

An amazing range of items were submitted, from robots to a carbon-footprint castle to a basket of recycled goodies.

The overall winner was Hannah Morrison, with her basket woven from newspapers and full of items made from waste – a coin purse, bracelet, flower, environmental game, etc.
