A Donside museum is to host a celebration of the performance car from 11am to 5pm on Sunday, July 1.

To mark SpeedFest, 100 cars will gather at the Grampian Transport Museum in Alford, by invitation, dating from post-1955 to the present day, with a small number of older motoring icons to set the scene. As far as possible, duplication is avoided and a different set of cars is invited each year.

The event is unique in Scotland in that the cars take to the track to be demonstrated during a number of special activities including pageants, parallel autotests and a series of spectacular pursuits.

The most represented make is Ferrari this year, with 12 different models, closely followed by Lamborghini. Some great rarities seen for the first time at the museum range from a 1934 Singer LeMans to a brand new McLaren.

Its all about the cars at SpeedFest and each entry is fully described in true motorshow fashion and on the track by expert commentary.

Another unique feature of the event is the chance to ride in a selection of cars. The first 600 visitors are given an early bird rides ticket to start the day off in spectacular style. To beat the rush, this year 300 rides will go to online ticket sales available on the museum’s website.

The motor trade and specialist companies are encouraged to attend to add interest and notable this year is a stand from Station Garage, Torphins, which is displaying Colin McRae’s famous 2001 Ford Focus WRC (Y4 FMC). McRae was about to win his second orld championship in this car when he crashed, handing the title to his rival, Richard Burns.

SpeedFest 2012 welcomes a display from the proposed new aviation museum, ‘Morayvia’ to be built at the Kinloss airbase. The centrepiece is the front section of an RAF Nimrod aircraft and a Nimrod flight simulator with expert tuition.
