Class act!
Two Deeside teachers are hoping to raise a huge amount of money for charity by running the London Marathon in April.
Laura Hoggan, a PE teacher at Banchory Academy and Kirsty Lytton, a visiting languages specialist for Aboyne’s feeder primary schools, will take on the 26.2 mile challenge in aid of Alzheimer Scotland.
The two women, who met as sailing instructors before becoming teachers, decided to enter the London Marathon after completing the Banchory Triathlon last year.
Laura said: “After completing the triathlon we decided we would try to run a marathon as it has been an ambition for a while now. We were fortunate enough to get a place in the London Marathon to run for Alzheimer Scotland.
“We are running for Alzheimer Scotland as we think it is a very worthy cause. Both of my grandfathers had Alzheimers before they died and Kirsty worked for a company who created computer programmes for Alzheimers patients.”
Alzheimer’s disease is an illness of the brain which causes dementia and affects one in every 20 people over the age of 65 in the UK.
Laura and Kirsty have been combining their training with trying to organise fundraising events for the charity.
Laura said: “We started training in October and are now running four times a week. We have reached 10 mile runs in training but are hoping to build this up to 18-20 miles.
“We have been fundraising hard to meet our target of £4000 before April. We have had several cake sales in our schools to raise money and are in the process of organising a quiz night at Banchory Town Hall in March.”
Laura and Kirsty are hoping people or local businesses might sponsor them through their website: www.justgiving.com/lauraandkirsty
