Community have their say on Ballater Old School site

The former Ballater Primary School has come under scrutiny once again with the community having their say earlier this month.

Residents met on July 1 to discuss their views on the future of the school building.

The community has been working to determine possible uses for the site for over 10 years.

Feedback from the latest meeting will be used in an application to Aberdeenshire Council to begin an ‘Asset Transfer’ process - part of its policy to support communities.

The application will outline who is representing the community, aspirations for the site and which organisations will assist with the final end use for the development.

The working group has been in discussion with a number of housing associations and has been supported by the Cairngorms National Park Authority and the Highland Small Communities Housing Trust.

The working group submitted an expression of interest for the site to the council in May. This submission is the next stage to begin the Asset Transfer process.

There is no guarantee that an application for the site through the process will be successful. However, by following the council’s policy and criteria, it is hoped there will be a successful outcome for Ballater.

Timescale for submission of a credible plan is tight. Anyone wishing to get involved with the project or find out more should contact Billy Duguid at the community council or email Nick Mardall at nick.dddp@btconnect.com.
