Councillors to take on catwalk for cancer cause

Two local councillors are taking to the catwalk to raise funds for a North-east cancer charity.

Katrina Farquhar and Joanna Strathdee will participate in the Courage on the Catwalk event in April.

The inaugural Friends of Anchor fashion show will feature real women from the area whose lives have been directly affected by cancer.

Twenty three women will be modelling this summer’s latest trends at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen on April 21.

Aboyne, Upper Deeside and Donside councillor Katrina Farquhar was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago and knows the importance of the charity’s work.

She said: “This is a fabulous event giving us the opportunity to inspire others that are living with cancer.

“I’m not sure if we realised how intensive it is going to be with lots of practice days to ensure the actual event will be brilliant for all to watch and enjoy and of course raise funds for Friends of Anchor.

“It is now seven years ago since my diagnosis of breast cancer and to be able to raise money for others is very important to me.

“When I went through my treatment, working with the charities helped me get through the hard days. I managed to help someone else and the charity was helping me cope.

“Looking back now the chemotherapy, various operations and radiotherapy have all left a mark with me but it has made me a more positive and hopefully less selfish person. So really something good does come out of everything!”

Cllr Strathdee, who represents the Huntly, Strathbogie and Howe of Alford area, is currently undergoing her third round of chemotherapy and she wants to give something back to the charity after providing her with valuable support.

“I feel very privileged to have been selected to take part in Courage on the Catwalk along with so many other fantastic ladies whose lives have been touched by cancer.

“It is now three years since my first diagnosis of primary peritoneal cancer and I have recently begun my third round of chemo. The symptoms and treatment are the same as for ovarian cancer.

During this time I have received fantastic support from many people who work tirelessly to help people like me and I want to give something back.”
