Dee bells should be ringing!
Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council has joined forces with Aberdeen City Wardens to improve safety on the old Deeside railway line.
The community council decided to act after safety concerns were expressed by several people about the dangers posed to users of the railway line, as a result of increasing numbers of people using it as a commuter route and for recreation. Bicycle bell checks with free fitting of bells were considered a good initial step.
City wardens have teamed up with the community council to carry out bicycle bell checks and encourage people to be considerate to other railway line users.
Team members will be speaking to cyclists and other railway line users this afternoon (Thursday), reminding them of the need to put safety first, and make sure they are seen and heard.
During the first bell check and fitting event at the old Cults station in early September, one bell was fitted every three minutes, when 132 cyclists passed the group. Forty five had no bell fitted to their bike, or the bell didn’t work. Forty got a free new bell, sponsored by the community council, which was fitted to the bike by the team.
Community council secretary Guus Glass said: “The community council has been made aware of an increased risk of accidents for the mix of young and old pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, horse riders, and dog walkers using this fabulous facility.
“The bell-fitting exercise is a vehicle to get the safety message across, but it is only a small step. It is important that users of the railway line are aware of each other and put safety first.”
Those using the line are asked to:Respect all other users of the path;Make yourself heard;Make sure you can hear and see other users;Cyclists keep to the left;Keep dogs and horses under control;Give other users ample room; Stop if there is lack of space to pass.
Community council members and city wardens will be at the old Cults railway station, at the foot of Station Road, from 4pm until 6pm on September 20, weather permitting.
