Dinnie window’s a winner

The Huntly Arms Hotel in Aboyne has been awarded two accolades at the bi-annual Aberdeenshire Design Awards.
The hotel’s stained glass window, named the ‘Dinnie’ window after famous strong man Donald Dinnie, claimed a Distinction for Craftsmanship and a Distinction for Conservation - the highest level awards that an entrant could claim.
The awards were in recognition of the exceptional work undertaken by Michael Zappert, a well established stained glass artisan, to restore the valuable stained glass window depicting Donald Dinnie, recognised as ‘The Nineteenth Century’s Greatest Athlete’.
Andy Woodcock, General Manager at the Huntly Arms Hotel said: “ Having Michael’s work and our Dinnie window recognised in such a manner is fantastic and we hope that our guests will continue to enjoy the unique craftsmanship displayed, of which we are very proud, for many years to come.”
Organised by Aberdeenshire Council, the bi-annual Aberdeenshire Design Awards aims to promote excellence and innovation in architecture, craftsmanship and landscape design.
The Huntly Arms Hotel - part of Oxford Hotels and Inns - was up against a 128 entrants across seven categories and the competition took place over the last 12 months.
The restoration and subsequent awards will secure the hotel’s long term future, the history of which dates back to 1432.
Reputed to be the oldest coaching inn within the country, the Huntly Arms Hotel was frequented by Queen Victoria, Tyrone Power and recently featured on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.
