Alford’s Emeli Sande was the toast of the Brit Awards last week after collecting two of the ceremony’s top prizes.

The 26-year-old singer-songwriter was named best British female before scooping the evening’s main award as her debut record Our Version of Events won Best Album.

Emeli also closed the ceremony by performing ‘Clown’ and ‘Next To Me’, two of the hit singles from her multi-platinum debut album.

Accepting her album prize, Emeli said: “I think I’m a very unlikely popstar. Thanks to everyone that’s bought this record and has made me feel part of something bigger.

“This is a dream really, so thank you for this year and this award. I’m so grateful.”

Head teacher of Alford Academy, Emeli’s old school, Moira Milne said: “Her successes are just reward for the incredibly hard work Emeli has put in over the years.

“We are all so proud of her. Everyone here at Alford Academy is speaking about her performance last night, she looked and sounded fabulous. There is a great buzz about the school.

“She is a very talented lady. It is a privilege for us to have such close links with her. We all pass on our congratulations to Emeli.”
