Emily settles in as new Deeside ranger

The Deeside area has a new recreation and community ranger for Forestry Commission Scotland.
Emily Holmes, 32, transferred from Forestry Commission England where she was working as a community ranger in South Yorkshire. She is new to the area and keen to get to know the local communities and the forests around Aberdeenshire. “I have a big interest in wildlife and the environment and I am often out with my binoculars and camera,” she said.
“My job covers much of Aberdeenshire including Deeside, Bennachie, Aberdeen city woods, Stonehaven and Laurencekirk.
“I am originally from Norfolk where I started my education in countryside management in Norwich, I then carried out my degree in countryside management at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, and during this time I did quite a lot of volunteering in a number of areas, including the Isle of Rum, the Norfolk broads and on a sustainable development project in Guatemala.
“I first visited Scotland at the age of 17 when I volunteered and explored the west coast for a month and I have ever since wanted to come back to Scotland on a permanent basis, so when the chance came up to transfer I jumped at it.
“The North-east is a fantastic diverse area and has everything from a fantastic coast, mountains, woodlands and farmland and very welcoming and friendly people.”
