Finding a home for unwanted furniture

A Deeside thrift store will be helping to give unwanted furniture a home as part of a new initiative.

Based at the Crows Nest Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Banchory, the Boxroom is launching its Magpie Project in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council, to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites.

The charity helps families in need furnish their homes, and the Magpie Project will benefit even more locals, by intercepting reusable household objects and furniture which is brought to the centre.

Members of the public will be approached by volunteers at the HWRC and asked if they would be willing to put suitable items into a special container rather than a skip.

There are currently two containers on site that Deeside residents have been filling with donations, but with the volunteers on site the number of donations will increase.

Items that can be reused will then be taken by the Boxroom either for sale in their shop or given to people in need.

Aberdeenshire Council's chairman of the Infrastructure Service Committee, Councillor Peter Argyle, said: "This is a very clever idea that will potentially have a number of benefits. Reducing the volume of waste going to landfill is a major priority, and this project could make a very big difference locally."

Alan Young, chief officer of Aberdeenshire CVS, said: "CVSA and the Boxroom are delighted to work with Aberdeenshire Council on this project. Whenever I tell people what it's all about, they are always asking, 'Why isn't someone doing this already?' Well, now they are. We've not even fully started yet, and already the containers are full, which goes to show how much support there is out there for the Magpie Project and what it is trying to achieve."

Visitors should note that the Magpie project at Crow's Nest is not accepting any electrical items; however there is a separate facility for recycling of these goods on-site.

The Boxroom at Tillybrake may accept certain electrical items but check with them first.
