Former police officer honoured

The most senior committee member of the Retired Police Officers Association North East Branch was at the centre of a special presentation last week.
Appointed to Aberdeen City Police as a constable on April 2, 1947, Lumphanan’s George Watt also served in Bomber Command during the Second World War.
Members of the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) honoured the 89-year-old for his service, in front of former police colleagues and his family.
Making the presentation was retired RAF Group Captain Phil Dacre MBE, who was accompanied by other RAFA dignitaries.
President of the Retired Police Officers Association, Kenny Thomson, also spoke briefly about George’s police career.
He said: “George retired from the Police service some 35 years ago and has been a staunch and loyal supporter of the Retired Officers Association, both at local and national level, since his own retirement.
“George is such an exuberant character. He has always got a story to tell and has a fantastic memory.
“It is with great pride and pleasure that the committee has been able to facilitate the event and involve members of the RAF Association in it.”
The presentation to George included giving him a framed print of a Lancaster bomber, one of the aircrafts he flew in his extensive career as an airman.
Born in Lumphanan on March 12, 1923, he attended Lumphanan Primary and then Inverurie Academy in 1935. When George was 17, the RAF Aircrew Selection Board attended his school and he was passed fit for service. In May 1942 he was called up at the age of 19.
Following his RAF service, he was keen to become a vet, but there was an 18-month waiting list for university courses and he worked on farms and with a vet practice in Inverurie before joining the police.
