From ‘aye aye’ to ‘arriba’ for Aboyne adventurers
A group of Aboyne Academy pupils have been planning a traditional Scottish ceilidh to raise funds for a Mexican adventure.
They’ll be trading their tartan for ponchos, their bonnets for sombreros and their fiddles for maracas when they embark on a trek through the Sierra Norte Mountains in the summer.
A dozen pupils will be heading off for four weeks to Southern Mexico in July to take on, what they have called, the challenge of their lifetime.
As well as trekking over some rough terrain, they will be working together to help restore community facilities in a small village on the Pacific coast.
They may also get the opportunity to get involved in projects associated with the local wildlife.
After some hard work they will have the chance to explore some of the ancient cultural Mayan sites that Mexico has to offer.
ADVENTURE
Group members have organised various fund-raising events which will be taking place over the coming months.
Three senior group members– Coralie Arthur, Elsa Brotchie and Thomas Thomson have been busy organising a family ceilidh, that they hope will help raise funds to take them from traditional Scotland to their Mexican adventure.
During the evening ticket holders will be able to dance the night away to a live ceilidh band as well as being treated to some top-notch Scottish entertainment including piping, dancing and singing - which will take place during the interval.
Those attending will also be treated to some traditional stovies and the organisers have thought about vegetarians too as they’ll have vegetarian haggis, neeps and tatties which have been donated by Morrisons of Banchory.
The ceilidh will be held in the MacRoberts Hall, Tarland on Friday, March 22, from 7.30 until 11.30pm. Tickets can be purchased from Aboyne Academy reception.
