Funding for Alford campus

Aberdeenshire Council has welcomed the Scottish Government’s funding commitment to help create a new community campus in Alford.

The project is one of 30 included in a government list of the next schools to be built or refurbished in Scotland under the Schools for the Future programme, and will be funded jointly by Aberdeenshire Council.

In total, the Scottish Government has pledged £1.25 billion towards the construction of 67 new schools in Scotland over the past two years.

It is expected that work will begin on the Alford Community Campus in 2014.

Councillors backed a proposal to combine plans for a new primary and secondary school in the town last year in order to allow both to be built at the same time.

The scheme will involve a new 640-pupil academy, 325-pupil primary, and a four lane, 25 metre swimming pool.

The campus will also feature a community library, external sports facilities and accommodation for community learning and development activities.

Combining the projects reduced the cost of the scheme by £207,225, with the overall campus expected to cost £40,347,000. The construction of a £3million relief road is included within the costs.

Local residents were invited to view plans for the new campus at an event in Alford Community Centre this week.

Vice-chair of the Council’s Education, Leisure and Learning Committee, Councillor Ron McKail, said: “I very much welcome this news from the Scottish Government and look forward to following the project closely as it develops. I was pleased to hear that there was a good turnout at this week’s public consultation, and all the comments and views that were put forward at that event will be fed back into the plans.”
