Green Man stories by Loch Muick
A FREE, and delightfully wild, children's adventure afternoon on the shores of Loch Muick kicks off the Balmoral Rangers' summer programme on Monday (5 July), the first official day of the long holiday.
Following last summer's successful pond dips, shelter building and poking around in everything from bogs to regurgitated mouse skeletons, the Balmoral Estate Rangers have come up with more fun, educational ideas to give families an afternoon out in one of the most spectacular theatres in Scotland, the Spittal of Glen Muick.
The active events, which are open to everyone, are on the first and third Mondays of July and August. Booking is essential and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at 2pm at the Spittal Visitor Centre and wear clothing appropriate for the weather.
The sessions will include tales told by a professional storyteller and the guidance of a ranger to understand the natural world in the woods, mountains, river and loch.
The first event, on Monday, will be based on The Green Man stories which are a common feature in the folklore of many countries, and are believed to help people understand the relationship between humans and trees, combining legend, artwork and the shapes and sights of the forest floor.
The themes are not rigid and every opportunity will be taken to expand the topic to fit the day's uncertainties, whether caused by the weather or an unexpected creature who gets in the way!
Balmoral Head Ranger Glyn Jones said: "We're hoping to build on the success of last year's events, hopefully without the somewhat extreme weather of 2009, but that in itself can add to the fun.
"This is an opportunity for kids to be outdoors doing something different during the summer, learning about their environment at the same time."
The Balmoral Children's Events, run by the estate ranger service, are on Mondays 5 July, 19 July, 2 August and 16 August from 2 – 4 pm, at Spittal of Glenmuick Visitor Centre. They are free of charge, but all under-16s must be accompanied and booking is essential. Telephone (013397) 55059.
