Kincardine ONeil church is to be sold after weekend event
Mid Deeside Church (MDC) is to hold an “open afternoon” and special service later this month to mark the closure of the church building in Kincardine O’Neil.
MDC minister, Rev Alec Wark, said: “All churches have strong emotional ties for the communities they serve and the closure of the Kincardine O’Neil Church - as with the closure of the Stothert Memorial Church in Lumphanan in 2009 - has been a difficult, painful and brave decision, but a necessary one, for the congregation of MDC to make.
It is my business, along with the Kirk Session and congregation, to continue the work and presence of the church throughout all of the parish with or without a church building.”
The parish church in Kincardine O’Neil was opened in 1862 to replace St Mary’s Church across the road which had an unsafe roof and was too small for the then congregation.
At that time, before the railway had made a major impact on the Deeside area, the Parish of Kincardine O’Neil included the Torphins and Tornaveen areas, with the parish boundary going to the top of Benaquhallie in the north and Bridge of Canny in the east. The church was planned and built in less than two years and cost £1400 (equivalent to about £140,000 today). Back in 1862 it was the responsibility of the “Heritors” – local landlords – to raise the funds needed to build and maintain the established Church of Scotland buildings. The church hall was added in 1913.
