Lumphanan Hut is a real community effort!
YOUNGSTERS in Lumphanan will be looking forward to the end of the summer holidays, before they've even begun, thanks to some 'marathon' fundraising.
Employees of Marathon Oil, Aberdeen have raised 4,140 for Lumphanan playgroup, The Hut's new garden, and green-fingered toddlers are all set for planting flowers and vegetables. And they not only raised funds for the garden, but rolled up their sleeves digging soil, planting shrubs, laying turf and making raised beds for the toddlers.
The Hut will be opening its doors in August with 26 children enrolled.
The project began three years ago to accomodate the growing numbers of children in the village, after an initial plan to recycle a disused temporary classroom literally fell apart.
Project Team Co-ordinator Jenna Storey said: "This just shows what can be achieved when a community pulls together. We were devastated when the portacabin idea had to be scrapped. Where do you begin to salvage something when your dreams are in bits? I think our strength was our ability to look beyond here and now - to see into the future and the benefits a facility like this offers to our village."
Jenna continued: "We then had to convince the people with the right expertise to believe in our plans. Deeside Timberframe supplied the kit to us and local joiner Mark Anderson has erected it. We were grateful to Gavin Dinnie for putting on the roof and we've had amazing support from Smith Plumbing Services as well as electrician Gordon Massie. The biggest hurdle by far was the services. We wouldn't be ready to open if McIntosh Plant Hire hadn't stepped in with a helping hand this winter.
"These are only a few of our "investors" - the list is two pages at least! This is a huge investment in the community - not only for our children, but future generations. Plans are underway for a grand opening at the end of August - we hope everyone will come along and join us in celebrating our achievement."
