Macdonald clan on the march for a good cause

OVER 20 members of an Alford family are undertaking a gruelling challenge this weekend in a bid to raise some much needed cash to help Aberdeen Royal Infirmary purchase a 'shockwave therapy' machine.

The Macdonald family are cycling, walking and riding the 80 miles along the Deeside Railway Line from Aberdeen to Ballater and around Glen Muick on Sunday (July 11).

The family decided to start fundraising as the family's great-grandmother Marian Macdonald, who turns 80 on Saturday, has experienced the benefits of the new shockwave machine in treating a venous leg ulcer.

The machine has been on loan to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the Macdonalds are hoping their cash will go towards purchasing a permanent machine for the hospital's Vascular Unit.

Marian's daughter Sheila McGuigan said the family have already raised over 2,000.

She said: "We are absolutely delighted with that. Everyone in the village has been incredibly supportive and the shops have all put posters in their windows letting people know about the challenge.

"We haven't set ourselves a specific fundraising target but these shockwave therapy machines cost around 40,000 so we really want to raise as much as we possibly can."

The family members and partners of family members taking part range in ages from five to 84 and their personal challenges will differ in length according to their fitness and age.

Sheila added: "There will be 24 of us doing it. My mother is going to complete a section on her mobility scooter. Hopefully we will get a nice day for it. I don't think the younger ones who are doing the full 80 miles would want it to be too hot on Sunday. We wouldn't want it to rain either but a bit of a breeze would be just perfect!"
