Macdonalds power towards healthy sum

AN Alford family has raised £4,500 towards purchasing a shockwave therapy machine for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Over 20 members of the Macdonald family took part in the Big 80 Challenge, walking, cycling and riding along the Deeside Railway Line from Aberdeen to Ballater and around Glen Muick on Sunday.

The family members taking part were aged between five and 84 and completed personal challenges dictated by their fitness and age, with six of the fittest members completing the whole 80 miles.

The Macdonalds decided to start fundraising as the family's great-grandmother Marian Macdonald, 80, has experienced the benefits of the shockwave machine in treating a venous leg ulcer.

The machine has been on loan at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the Macdonalds are hopeful the money they have raised will go a long way towards purchasing a permanent machine, which costs 40,000, for the hospital's Vascular Unit.

Marian's daughter Sheila McGuigan said: "It went really well and we were very lucky with the weather. It was windy but it never rained.

"The six who did the whole 80 miles left Aberdeen at 8am and completed the challenge around 6.30pm. They all looked remarkably bright and cheery after they had done it but they were certainly saddle-sore with aching legs.

"Everyone did their bit and my Mum and Dad even went from Dinnet to Cambus O'May on their mobility scooters."

Sheila added: "We would like to thank everyone who supported us, particularly Derek Clarke from Torphins who lent us the support vehicle for the bikes and Davie Neilson who drove the van.

"We would also like to thank Angus Robinson whose company, EMEDD Technology, supplies the machine. He left Glasgow at half four in the morning to come up and take part in the challenge. He did the whole 80 miles and made a significant personal contribution to our fundraising, for which we are hugely grateful."
