Marking the Jubilee
Plans are now well developed to enable the Aboyne community to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style.
An informal committee, jointly hosted by Mid Deeside Community Council (MDCC) and Mid Deeside Limited (MDL), has been meeting every two weeks to plan a family-based event to be held on Aboyne Green on Sunday June 3.
Invitations will be delivered to every household in the village and surrounding area within the next few weeks and it is hoped the whole community will gather together to mark this significant anniversary.
A range of community groups are already involved in preparations, including the Scouts and Guides, Probus, Rotary and the Aboyne Highland Games, while businesses in the village are also entering the spirit of the occasion with enthusiasm. Both Aboyne Academy and the primary school are involved in preparations.
Final details of the programme are still being finalised, but the event will include music, family games and activities for all ages, based around a Big Aboyne Picnic.
Vice-chairman of MDCC, Mick Mallett said: “We plan to make this a day the whole community will remember. It is 115 years since the last Diamond Jubilee, which makes this a special occasion for several generations.
“I am particularly pleased that young people are planning some of the games and activities and are represented on the committee. We are working hard to raise funds for the event, as we would really like to make it free for everyone. We have some sponsorship committed already and would be delighted to hear from anyone who may like to assist.”
MDL chairman Peter Argyle said: “There will be Scottish music played on the day and we would love to hear from anyone in or around Aboyne who would be willing to perform during the event. I know there are a lot of talented musicians in Aboyne; this will be their chance to shine!”
Plans are also being developed for a permanent memorial to the Diamond Jubilee.
One proposal is to restore the fountain on the edge of the Green so it will once more run with water and become a feature for the village. It is built of polished pink and gray granite and was “Erected by the inhabitants of Aboyne and neighbourhood in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria 1897”.
It also records the coronation of Edward VII in 1902 and it is suggested that a further inscription could be added to the fountain to mark this year’s Diamond Jubilee.
