More than a grand gesture!

A CHEQUE for over £1,000 was this week handed over to the British Heart Foundation by the organisers of an annual golf outing played in memory of a deceased Alford Golf Club member.

Eighteen teams of four took part in the Kenny Wood Memorial at Alford last year.

Fred Robertson, who organises the event with Tom Collie, said: "We are delighted that we have broken the 1,000 barrier for the first time. We have been running the competition in memory of Kenny for the past five or six years and normally make between 700 and 800. It was a great success this year and we are grateful to everybody who helped us raise so much money."

The Heather Robertson Memorial Shield was also contested by female teams for the first time.

Fred said: "I lost my wife last year so I decided to donate a shield and the prizes for the event in memory of her. In the past the ladies teams would just compete along with the men and juniors but now they have their own special prize to play for as well."

Chairman of the British Heart Foundation's Aberdeen branch, Alastair Ramsay, thanked the fundraisers for the generous donation.

He said the money would be put towards the Aberdeen Heart Nurse Appeal, a fundraising initiative to raise 80,000 to provide two heart failure nurses to treat and support people with heart failure and their families and carers throughout Grampian.
