Nathan steels himself for ironman challenge
A WESTHILL teenager is taking on a mammoth challenge to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease Scotland and Kidney Research UK.
Nathan Andrew, 18, is doing a half Ironman, which comprises of a 2km swim followed by a 90km cycle and a 21km run.
Young Westhill triathlete Lewis Murchie was going to be joining his friend Nathan for the race but was forced to pull out of the event because of prior commitments.
Nathan said he is looking forward to pushing his body to its absolute limit, all for a good cause.
The former Westhill Academy pupil said: "I decided to set up this challenge as I have a passion for raising money for those who need it. When I found out the mum of one of my best friends had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease I thought it would be the best way I could support the family and help others in a similar situation around Scotland.
"Renal research is also very close to my heart as my mother is a senior sister at Aberdeen Hospital's Renal Unit so I was keen to raise some money for the research in this important area. The reason I chose to do a half Ironman is because I wanted it to be a big challenge for myself and hopefully in return it would challenge others to sponsor me for these great causes. This is all about making money for the charities and nothing to do with a 'feel good' for me!"
Nathan says he has been training as much as he can, with his friend Lewis providing additional coaching and motivation.
He added: "This is a massive challenge for me as I have only taken part in one triathlon previously. At the moment I am training around 18 hours a week in between working at Westhill Swimming Pool and doing work experience at Customdubz."
The challenge starts at 8am on July 10 at Westhill Swimming Pool.
