New play park opens in Tarland
Tarland celebrated the opening of the new adventure play equipment in the park on Wednesday.
Kathy Ader, one of the committee members who helped the project to be realised thanked all of those involved.
Air Commodore Bob Joseph, CBE, the administrator of the MacRobert Trust and one of the main funders, cut the ribbon and declared the adventure equipment open.
Leah Cromar, Kirsty and Lucy Irvine and Ross McLellan, youth members of the committee who helped to set up the project, were asked what they thought and said “the new equipment is awesome” and “it’s much better because before there wasn’t much to do and now all of us can play at the same time”.
The project was first started in 2010 when Tarland Development Group asked young people what additional facilities they would like to see in the village. The two most popular things to emerge from a consultation were a youth cinema and adventure play equipment in the park suitable for older children and teenagers.
The youth cinema, which is run by the young people of the Tarland Youth Cinema group, has been up and running for over a year.
Tarland Play Park committee, which includes adults and young people from various groups in the village including the Youth Club, Youth Cinema, Cromar Community Council and Tarland Development Group, then planned the next phase of the project, the design and installation of the adventure play equipment.
The young people who put their time into coming to meetings, helping to run a consultation evening and making decisions were Leah Cromar, Kirsty and Lucy Irvine, Melanie and Ross McLellan, Bob and Connah O’Reilly Mclean, William Redpath, Josh Latimer, Ruraidh Diack and Robbie Iason.
In August, Scotplay, a Glasgow-based company which designs and installs play equipment, arranged for the new equipment, costing almost £30,000, to be installed in the Tarland Play Park. This includes a 25m zip wire, a wooden climbing frame, a basket swing and a four seat waltzer. Aberdeenshire Council is also planning in the near future to install a youth shelter in the park to give teenagers a dry place to sit.
Funding for the project was secured from Aberdeenshire Council (planning gain and Fairer Scotland Fund) as well as the MacRobert Trust.
Doug Allan, from Aberdeenshire Council Landscape Services also supported the project throughout with advice and expertise and Tarland primary school helped with the consultations.
The committee expressed their gratitude for all of the help they received throughout the project and noted that without the generous support of the funders it would not have been possible.
