No dodging sports festivals organised by pupils

ALFORD Primary School pupils are taking part in a series of sports festivals organised and run entirely by their classmates.

Primary 6 and 7 pupils from the school have recently completed the Sports Leaders UK Young Leader Award and are puttingt their new skills to the test.

They will be responsible for organising and running a programme of six festivals for primary school children with minimum adult supervision.

Abigail Hay, active schools co-ordinator for the Alford Schools Network, said: "The pupils have spent six weeks learning four different sports with a view to running activities for the rest of the school. They have all done tremendously well to complete the training which included; learning the sports, creating their own rules and developing a points system.

"This term they are going to organise and run a series of festivals for their school all by themselves while I sit back and watch!"

Pupils taking part in the festivals – which will be held at Alford Academy's Games Hall on Friday mornings over the coming weeks – will participate in four sports: Hockey, netball, basketball and ultimate dodgeball.

The budding sports stars will participate in their school house teams during the one-hour festivals, which will run between 11am and 12noon, and can gain additional points for good sportsmanship.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council's Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Richard Stroud, said: "I'm delighted to see pupils from Alford Primary School have taken part in the Sports Leaders UK Young Leader Award.

"The leadership and teamwork skills they have learned from the programme will help them give instruction, organise groups of people and work effectively at the festivals."

Vice-chair of the committee, Isobel Davidson, added: "This is a great achievement for pupils at Alford Primary School and the skills they're learning through this programme will help their development and make them more confident individuals. By running the festivals they'll also pick up a number of new skills and be able to draw upon the knowledge and experience they've learned as well as an extensive range of games and activities."

The first series of festivals was held last Friday at Alford Academy Games Hall.
