Pet dog towed to death

A DOG was towed to its death in a "tragic accident" in Deeside.

The dog, a black Labrador, had been tied to a recovery vehicle by its owner at a depot in Drumoak.

The driver of the vehicle, unaware of the dog's presence, then drove towards Aberdeen and was not aware of the dog until he had reached Peterculter, by which time the animal had died of its injuries.

Scottish SPCA Chief Inspector John Carle said no action would be taken following the incident which occurred on Monday, June 14.

Mr Carle said: "Both the dog owner and the driver are deeply upset by what was an extremely unfortunate and tragic accident. We have spoken to the parties involved and we will be taking no further action."

He added: "We were alerted to the incident whereby a dog had been temporarily tied to a recovery vehicle by its owner at a depot in the Drumoak area. The driver of the vehicle was not aware of the dog's presence and drove off after receiving a call out to a breakdown.

"The driver drove some distance before he became aware of the dog's presence, by which time the dog had been fatally injured."

Local councillor Graeme Clark (Stonehaven and Lower Deeside) said he was saddened by the incident.

He added: "It appears to have been a tragic accident and I really feel for the owner of the dog and the driver of the vehicle.

"I was recently expressing my sympathies to the family of a motorcyclist who died in a collision at Rickarton near Stonehaven. For many families a pet is very much part of the family so I can only again offer my sincere sympathies to both parties affected by this sad story."
