Renowned climber to give talk at Aboyne

The Active Aboyne evening programme begins on Thursday, September 13 with a talk from Stephen Venables, the first British climber to tackle Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen.

Mr Venables has since made a career as a speaker, entrancing audiences with tales of expeditions to remote areas and of early climbers.

He has been to South Georgia no fewer than five times and his talk will bring to life the challenges faced by Shackleton in his epic crossing of South Georgia, on his life or death mission to escape from a ship destroyed by the ice of Antarctica, as well as describing his own explorations some 90 years later.

Stephen’s highly acclaimed photos of mountain, sea, and wildlife capture the haunting beauty of South Georgia.

Eilidh Scobbie, organiser of Active Aboyne said: “I am really delighted that we have persuaded Stephen to include Aboyne in his lecture tour. He is a first class speaker, and I know it will be an excellent evening, with stunning photography and an illuminating commentary, describing an area few are lucky enough to travel to.”

The lecture will take place at 7.30pm in the Deeside Community Centre, Bridgeview Road Aboyne.

Tickets cost £12 and can be obtained either from the Community Centre (tel 013398-8622) or the Mid Deeside Office (013398-85222).

A raffle will be held, with funds divided between the Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Team and Active Aboyne.
