Safety first for Banchory director

A Banchory man has been given an award for helping to reduce injury and ill-health within the global engineering business he works for.
The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) North-east of Scotland Branch recognised AMEC’s Europe and West Africa brownfield director Alan Johnstone for influencing thousands of employees to work more safely and healthily.
During a ceremony at Hilton Treetops Hotel, he was also awarded the certificate of merit for reducing lost-time accidents from 18 to three over five years.
Branch chair Donald Macfarlane said: “We think it’s vitally important to recognise the contributions of those people who improve health and safety for colleagues and others around them, often by understanding how vital it is to build it into the centre of a business, to help it work better. Alan exemplifies this attitude.”
Alan, based at the AMEC office in Nigg, said: “Keeping people free from injury and ill-health helps them do their job, which is good for their company, but not only that, it makes sure they are happy and that feeds back into home life too. I have a real passion for improving health and safety in the industry. It is about real people, not statistics and that’s a focus for me. We only get change when everyone cares and so I’m proud the attitude the team have taken to keeping themselves and their colleagues safe.”
