Volunteers and staff at local libraries are good as gold!

Liz Gervaise, Senior Library Assistant at Banchory Library, received a Gold Award in the efficiency and innovation category in the recent Aberdeenshire Council Employee Achievement Awards.

Liz leads a number of library initiatives to involve the community in partnership with colleagues in other disciplines, and one of her latest ventures has been to take children and mums from her Bookbug storytime group to a local care home to entertain residents with songs.

Meanwhile volunteers from Banchory are among those to be thanked for supporting ICT learning in Aberdeenshire libraries

Aberdeenshire Council’s library service is hosting an event to thank the volunteers who help support ICT learning across the area.

From showing people how to get the most from the internet and email, to introducing them to social media, volunteers give up their time to help individuals who want to get to grips with modern technology.

Between them library volunteers have devoted many hours to the project, linked learners to relatives overseas and have taught older folks how to shop online, how to price match holiday offers, and access reliable health information. They work with learners on a one-to-one basis and use a learning plan tailored to suit each individual.

Future plans include teaching learners how to use mobile devices such as the tablets and make use of new developments such as the Aberdeenshire Library App.

The event will be held in Inverurie Library this Friday (June 29) and will give volunteers from across Aberdeenshire the opportunity to meet other volunteers and library support staff, to share their experiences and celebrate their achievement.

Refreshments will be served and volunteers will be presented with certificates detailing the number of hours they have devoted to the project.
