Wintry weather causes Friday school disruption

Schools across Deeside and Donside were disrupted on Friday (March 22) as the spate of wintry weather hitting the North- east continued.

Schools including Banchory and Alford academies were affected by the arctic conditions.

Donside’s Clatt School closed entirely while Deeside’s Braemar closed at 1pm after snowdrifts blocked many of the region’s roads.

On the Aberdeenshire Council website Braemar warned: “I must stress that staff and parents should only travel if you feel it is safe to do so. If it is not possible to travel safely, work should to undertaken at home on agreed tasks.”

While Banchory and Alford academies were open to staff and pupils, certain bus runs were not being made.

Craigievar Primary also did not have working transport links on the day.

The council website stated regarding the school: “We have had reports of drifting on local roads. Any parent who wishes to collect their children early should contact the school.”

Altogether almost 30 schools across Aberdeenshire were affected by Thursday nights snowfall.

Drifting snow also saw numerous roads shut.

Worse was found further South, with Dunfries and Galloway closing more than 100 schools on the day.
