Sir Robert Smith MP for West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine met with local young carers to mark this year’s Carers Week (June 18-24) in recognition of the contribution made by people in Aberdeenshire and who provide unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled.

The theme for Carers Week 2012 is ‘In sickness and in health” recognising the strain families are under as many see their services cut back.

It calls for better financial and practical support for the diverse range of people who have caring responsibilities.

Sir Robert said: “Thousands of people of all ages across West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine sacrifice not only their time, but also their money and their health in order to care for a loved one. Together they save this country billion every year. It’s vital that carers are offered regular breaks from caring and health checks so that they can be supported.

“This year I have chosen to visit with young carers, who often find their role as a carer extra hard as many of their own peers may not understand the role they are playing in their family. I am so pleased that there is special support available to young carers in Aberdeenshire through the Young Carers Service. Caring can be so incredibly demanding. It’s important that young carers know that they don’t have to struggle on alone.”

Tanja Morisson, Senior Practioner with the Young Carers Service said: “The young carers really appreciated Sir Robert taking time out of his weekend to come and meet with them and find out about the issues facing young carers and the services we offer to help support them.”

Carers Week is organised by a partnership of eight national charities: Age UK, Carers Trust, Carers UK, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, MS Society, and Parkinson’s UK. For more information about local events and activities visit www.carersweek.org.
