Youngsters rise to reading challenge

Almost 9,000 children took part in Aberdeenshire Council’s Summer Reading Challenge by successfully completing six books of their own choice over the summer holidays.
In recognition of this year’s Olympic Games, the challenge was chosen to link in with the sporting theme and aimed to help promote healthy bodies and minds.
Run by the Council Library Service since 2000, the challenge is a fun and accessible way for children of all ages and abilities to get involved with books.
Prizes were presented to the winners of two fun competitions which ran alongside the reading challenge, the first of which involved creating a trophy, and the second writing a short story about a day in the life of a hero or heroine.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Councillor Isobel Davidson, said: “I’m very pleased to hear that this year’s competition has been as popular as ever and that thousands of children once again got involved in the 2012 Marathon Read.
“The continuing success of the challenge highlights the important role of libraries and books in our communities and shows that even in this electronic age, children of all ages still enjoy being read to and reading books for themselves.”
Oil and gas company Total has sponsored the event for the past 12 years.
Total’s communication adviser, Sandra McIntosh said: “In this electronic age, it is fantastic to see that picking up a book can still stimulate and capture the imagination of school children.”
