CULTS triathlete Michael Adams recorded his first ever overall win in a triathlon earlier this week in Vancouver.

The 19-year-old who finished second in last month's Canadian Championships lead from start to finish in the Vancouver Triathlon on Monday in his final race of the season at the city's Stanley Park.

Michael set a new junior course record on his way to victory and also posted the fastest time in the bike section.

The former Cults Academy pupil said: "It was a great atmosphere with more than 1,000 people there cheering us on.

"I came out of the swimming section with a good lead and I pushed right from the start on the bike. My legs were feeling great so I kept the speed up during the massive hill on each of the two laps and just kept focused on the fact that there were probably lots of fast cyclists catching me up.

"As it turned out there weren't any guys catching me up and I came into the transition with a two minute lead and the fastest bike split of the day.

"The run was fun as I just stayed relaxed and kept technique in mind. Last year's champion was chasing me down but I did enough to stay in front and sprint across the line to roughly 500 Vancouverites cheering, which was a nice feeling."

Michael, who recently started as a student at the University of British Columbia, now faces a tough training period through the winter months before competitions begin again in March.
