81 year old John wins gold in Miami

Veteran badminton player John Merritt, 81, who plays badminton at the Banchory and Stonehaven Leisure Centres, has just returned from his second year competing in the 2012 US Senior International in Miami, Florida.

After winning the silver medal in the over 80s singles in this tournament last January John went one better this time by winning the gold medal.

John’s fitness and shot making won him a hard fought match as he overcame his doubles partner, Wolfgang Arlt of the USA 21-19, 21-14.

Not satisfied with only competing in his own age group, John also played against younger players in the over 75s doubles, where he and Wolfgang lost in the final to the number one seeds 21-8, 21-18, just running out of time for a comeback.

John plans to compete again this year in the Canadian Masters in May where he will be hoping to defend his title in the over 80s singles.
