Adams in the swim at Windsor
CULTER triathlete Mike Adams said he was delighted with his performance at the Windsor Triathlon at the weekend.
The 21-year-old was competing against some of Britain's top triathletes but showed no signs of being overawed as he went on to record the fastest ever elite lead during the opening swimming section.
Mike said: "The field of athletes was stronger than last year and Richard Stannard was on the start line unlike in 2009. He made his name coming first out of the water at the London Triathlon 10 years in a row and historically has been regarded as the fastest swimmer in British Triathlon so I was really looking forward to a head to head with us both in good form.
"I had a great start and managed to take a slightly different line than the other guys. It's an interesting swim 900m up the Thames before turning back downstream for 600m. I was in the lead from the start and just got into my rhythm, managed to put 25m into Stannard by the 900m mark. By the swim exit I had 50m on him which equated to 30 seconds by the time I entered transition, the biggest ever elite lead out from the swim at Windsor."
Mike said he was also happy with how he performed in the bike section, recording a time of 58 minutes 53 seconds.
He said: "The big lead from the swim meant I could relax a little between the swim and bike, as usually the transitions are hectic with everyone fighting for position but I just stayed relaxed and got my breath back.
"I was out onto the bike first, still with a pretty big gap, and it took the chasing group of four about a kilometre to catch up. It's generally accepted that you can go much faster in a group than out solo so I just easy pedalled until they caught up.
"The bike felt strong and much better than last year. I even managed to break way off of the front of the lead group twice in order to increase the pace while heading back into Windsor. Though by the time I hit the run I was feeling the effects of the big swim and bike effort and dropped back a few positions. That wasn't too much of a worry though as I was really pleased with the race, to be at the front making a difference to the race outcome by making the favourites work hard to catch up is what I felt like I was missing out on last year."
Michael finished in 26th position with a time of two hours three minutes and one second.
The former Cults Academy pupil heads to Belgium for a World Cup race later this month before heading to the Alps for some altitude training.
