Banchory West Mens Badminton team continued their unbeaten league run with an 8-1 win over Grampian Police, following on from a 6-3 win over Granite City ‘A’ the previous week.
Despite the score, the match against the Police was not easy by any means, with several tight three-game rubbers.
Banchory first pair Mal Gall and Daniel Broadhead managed a clean sweep of their three rubbers, but were pushed hard by the Police second pair, eventually winning the third game 21-18.
Banchory second pair Richie Batho and Gary Beaton won a good three-setter against the Police first pair but lost another three-setter to the second pair after winning a close first game 23-21. However, they made it two out of three with a convincing win against the Police third pair.
Callum Roberts and Leon Back, playing at third pair, managed a very respectable clean sweep, although they had a tough three-setter against the Police seconds, eventually winning the decider 24-22.
The results to date put Banchory at the top of Aberdeen and District League Men’s Division 2 and in contention for promotion this season. Hopefully the good run will continue with the last match of 2012 against Beacon.
The ladies team played its second fixture of the season against Beacon at Beacon Leisure Centre on and it was played in the usual round robin ladies match format.
Hazel Beaton and Hilary Cowe won the first rubber 21-16, 21-18 but gave themselves extra work with a few unforced errors while they got used to the unfamiliar lights and hall
Hilary and Kay Beaton (playing her first competitive ladies match) lost their first set heavily, and while making more of their opportunities in the second set, could not match the wiles of Beacon’s second pairing and lost 6-21, 13-21.
Hazel and Kay teamed up for the final rubber and having been down 13-18, they fought back strongly but lost the first set in a close 22-24 encounter.
They upped their game however and won the next two sets to give the Ladies team an overall 2-1 score.
At present four out of the eight teams in the single ladies division share the top spot on equal points, but taking into account set and points differences, Banchory sits in fourth position.
